"dcterms:description": "\"coendou prehensilis\". with sharp spines, a big, round nose, and a tail they can hang from, prehensile-tailed porcupines are nocturnal vegetarian rodents. they have short, thick spines, and their body color runs from yellowish to orange-rust to brown to almost black. they weigh 4 to 11 pounds (2 to 5 kg). their bodies are 300 to 600 millimeters long, and their tails are almost as long as their bodies, adding another 330 to 485 millimeters. like howler monkeys, these porcupines use their prehensile tails for grasping and hanging. these tails have no spines, and the upper side near the end has a callus pad. these porcupines are found in forests in venezuela, guiana, brazil, bolivia, paraguay, trinidad, and some extreme northern sections of argentina.",

"description": "Most of the specimens are from Washington, Oregon, and elsewhere in western North America, but many have been acquired from other parts of the world through collecting and exchange. Specimens are being continually acquired by the museum, and the collections are growing by 1-2%/year. Many skeletons of birds and mammals have been prepared to accompany the more traditional skin collections. Especially noteworthy are the largest collections of herps and bird eggs in the Northwest and, until very recently, the largest collection of mammals in the Northwest. The bird wing collection is also of special significance, as a fifth of the bird specimens in the collection have been prepared since 1990 and thus have associated wings. Because it contains series of many species of vertebrates from throughout western North America, the Slater is an excellent source of material for the study of geographic variation.",
