"dwc:fieldNotes": "NOTEBY J.Longino: On this day I baited with sugar water in the st. 118 patch. Ants recruited to many of the baits rapidly, and stayed on them all day. The baits were checked near 1030, 1115, 1200, 1317, 1816, 2110. On 118a, I saw a Cr. brevi. as prey of an E. tuberculatum. E. tub. did not appear on the bait until 1328; the baits were empty on the three previous checks, and the E. tub. stayed on the bait until the last check. On 118b, Cr.limata-c recruited heavily to the upper bait and was very active on all checks. Wasmannia auropunctata was on the lower bait by 1200 and remained for the rest of the day. On 118c, Cr. brevi. was present but not abundant on all checks; at 1559 Paratrechina #1 had joined the Cr. on the bait and shared it until 2110. On 118d, nothing visited the bait until 1816, when suddenly there was a huge ball of Solenopsis A, including majors, coming from a very cryptic hole in the ground a few cm from the base of the plant. On 118e, one bait had Cr. brevi. until 1325. The column went from the bait to a small bivouac on the plant, to a small tree a few meters away, up into the petiole of a dead Cecropia leaf, back down the tree, and off into the vegetation. I took the leaf down and cut it open; it was full of Cr. brevi. workers with a very small amount of brood. This may have disturbed the column to the bait, since there were no more visitors at the bait. A second bait on a small nearly leafless plant had a light mix of Cr. brevi. and, building up more later, Paratrechina #1 and Conomyrma pyramicus. On 119c, four baits scattered over the clump had Cr. brevi. until 1321; at 1816 there was nothing on the baits, and at 2121 Camponotus #9 were on the baits. On 119d there were 3 baits. #1 had few Cr. brevi. in the middle of the day, nothing else. #2 had E. tub. at 1200, Solenop. B at 1317, and E. tub. the rest of the day. #3 had Cr. brevi. all day except 1816, when there was nothing (this may have been due to rain washing out the bait). At 2112 I noticed that the Cr. brevi. at the bait were coming from a nest in a small piece of hollow stem ~1/2 m below the bait. Ten days later these ants were in the same nest at the same time, but there was no activity. It appears that these ants stayed up late to visit the bait. On 119e, Cr. brevi. were on the bait until 1320, after which there was nothing. The Cr. on this bait followed a trail ~2m away to a small hollow stem, packed with workers, from which issued another another column heading off into the vegetation. Cr. brevi. seems to have large polydomous colonies. I haven't found a queen, but I haven't looked very hard. The workers are active during the day, but at night they can be found clustered in little groups in any little cavity. Early in the morning, small clusters of dew-covered, sluggish workers are scattered on tree trunks. During the day, workers frequently use even the smallest cavities as bivouacs, and I have seen them take prey into very small cavities, possibly using them as caches. One of these small cavities that had been used for several weeks was a dead piece of stem less than 2cm long projecting from a P. pittieri plant. One day I found that it had been broken, and it had been abandoned by the ants. I looked inside, and there were three roach oothecae. These later produced parasites.",
