"dwc:fieldNotes": "NOTEBY J. Longino, NOTEDATE 30-Jan-97: One day old treefall, a giant Inga of some kind with blood-red sap, at the base of the Claro ridge behind the comedor. Crematogaster erecta were most abundant, with large columns moving over all the branches. Underneath a Heliconia leaf on the trunk was a large aggregation of workers, brood, a dealate queen, and two alate females. Cephalotes: Workers were scattered thinly over the tree. There were many workers around a nest entrance in a branch, about half-way up the tree, branch diameter 30 cm. I cut the branch open and collected the entire contents (alive) except for very small brood. This included minors, majors, a single dealate queen, and many males. The nest was a baseball-sized cavity in the center of a live branch. The entrance was through a rotten knot-hole. The entrance channel was plugged by a solid mass of ants, and the inside walls of the cavity were covered with a solid layer of ants. Water had collected in the bottom of the cavity, and it looked like there was much drowning brood in the bottom. I kept the colony for a while in a plastic dish. The workers moved the brood into a petri dish covered with aluminum foil. They seemed to keep a lot of liquid around the brood. Most of the colony was preserved in alcohol when I had to leave. Zacryptocerus maculatus: A nest was in the center of a live stem, stem dia. 14mm, at the very top of the tree. A single round hole extended perpendicularly from the surface to a central cavity which extended in both directions. The cavity was 5.5cm long and 3mm wide. The nest contained only a major, one mature worker, one callow worker, and 7 individual brood, ranging from a very small larva to a pupa. Other ants: strays.",
