"dwc:fieldNotes": "wet forest, 2019: megalomyrmex very large nest. several meters across. on bank of small stream. a large area of excavation covered the ground surface, hundreds of small entrances, my excavations in surface soil turned up only scattered workers, no brood. as I dug deeper into the center of the nest (>20cm deep) workers became more dense and I began finding adult males and some brood. at the depth of my machete workers were very dense, brood more abundant, and two dealate queens were turned up. The soil was very friable, and I could not discern any gallery or chamber structure. given that I was digging in only a small part of the colony, and turned up two queens, the colony must have many queens. at the periphery of the colony I turned up mealy bugs or coccoids in the soil. I frequently find M. modestus building soil shelters up trees and under liana stems, tending coccids. NOTEBY J. Longino, NOTEDATE 24-Feb-99: All alcohol material sent to Brian Heterick, in response to following email: I am an entomologist associated with the Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia. My interests and expertise are in the field of Australian ant taxonomy. Two years ago I completed my doctorate at the University of Queensland, my doctoral thesis being a revision of the Australian MONOMORIUM. As well as a taxonomic analysis of the Australian MONOMORIUM fauna, I performed a cladistic analysis of that fauna utilizing only those species for which both reproductive castes were known. I decided on MEGALOMYRMEX and ANTICHTHONIDRIS as outgroups, though I now consider ANTICHTHONIDRIS as a likely congener with MONOMORIUM. Steve Shattuck, from the Australian National Insect Collection, was able to loan me workers of one MEGALOMYRMEX species, namely, MEGALOMYRMEX MODESTUS Emery. For this species I was also able to obtain most of the male characters I was using from the details contained in your revision of the genus MEGALOMYRMEX. Dr Brandao advises that you may have specimens of this species. Since I am now preparing my research for publication, I am wondering if you could assist by loaning me any available reproductives for MEGALOMYRMEX MODESTUS. I look forward to your reply. Yours sincerely, Brian Heterick School of Environmental Biology Curtin University of Technology P. O. Box U 1987 Perth, Western Australia 6845. NOTEBY J. Longino, NOTEDATE 3-Aug-10: This material came back at some point, because vial is here with males, workers, brood. No queen though. Original field notes mention 2 dealate queens. My records indicate one queen sent to Brandao, but I can't locate other one.",
