A main central ant garden was in an Inga longispica crown, and a constellation of smaller gardens were scattered in same crown and adjacent Dipholis crotonoides (Sapotac) crown [tree IDs by Hartshorn and Peralta]. The large nest in the Inga was moss-covered, and looked like the oldest one. I made extensive dissections of gardens, with abundant field notes and photos. I collected all the gardens in the Dipholis (colln 195), and only the main central garden in the Inga (colln 196). Workers, brood, males, and alate queens were dispersed throughout the gardens. I searched through all 10 gardens and failed to find any concentrated area of brood or a physogastric queen. Larvae and pupae always seemed to be evenly distributed throughout the matrix of the garden. Likewise alate queens and males were spread out. The extraordinary event was that when I returned to the camp for lunch, a physogastric queen and 1 attending worker dropped into or crawled onto my lap! I presume she crawled or was shaken into my clothing during the dissection (queen is in colln 196). It could be that there is only one active queen per colony. The spread out larvae could indicate that they feed on something produced by the garden itself. Epiphyte root secretions? The major epiphyte in the gardens was an aroid with thick, white, fleshy roots, which seemed to form the structure of most of the nests. There were about 20 epiphyte species total, including Piperac, Gesneriac, Bromeliac, Orchidac. Tree stems were densely clustered with scale insects under the carton. small nests of Tapinoma and Pseudomyrmex were found in dead sticks lodged in the garden epiphytes.",
