Longino, NOTEDATE 26-Mar-99: Date: Fri, 26 Mar 1999 10:54:24 -0500 From: Evert Lindquist <lindquiste@em.agr.ca> To: longinoj Subject: Identity of larval erythraeid mite ex Azteca ant Jack, I've identified the larval ectoparasitic mite that you sent attached to the Azteca xanthochroa queen (your #2757-S), as Leptus sp., family Erythraeidae. This is a large genus of mites whose species are known primarily from the larval instar found attached to insects. Some species seem to attach to a wide variety of hosts, but not a lot is known about their habits and behavior.. NOTEBY J. Longino, NOTEDATE 2-Mar-99: An Azteca xanthochroa queen had a mite attached to it between the petiole and gaster. I sent the mite to Evert Lindquist. He replied: The Azetca xanthochroa queen arrived here safely last week. I had a quick look at the mite on it, which turns out to be a parasitic larva of an erythraeid mite. After it is slide-mounted, I can probably ID it to genus for you, but that's about it. Most of these mites are not highly host specific in questing for arthropodan hosts. They are distant relatives to chiggers, and like them, may latch onto whatever happens by for a blood meal.",
