"dwc:fieldNotes": "NOTEBY J.Longino: Treefall 2. A Protium tree branch recently fell. At first glance it was bare, but then I saw a few scattered ants. Adult workers occupied cavities in the center of young, 1-2cm dia. living branches, and the entrance holes were covered with small earth galleries. These earth mounds had the appearance of ant gardens, with numerous seedlings emerging from them (figure in notes). The base of the branch was wider, 2-3cm dia., and contained more extensive earth-works, from which grew a mat of Peperomia large enough to be flowering (P. macrostachya I think). The Peperomia was growing out from the earthworks, up and down the branch, but was rooted only in the ant construction. The only places epiphytes were growing on the branch were on or from ant galleries. The large galleries at the base of the branch covered entrances to two larger internal chambers. These chambers contained many alate males and females, and much reproductive brood. None of the chambers contained coccids or other non-ant inhabitants. The branch was no doubt part of a larger canopy colony.",
