"dwc:fieldNotes": "NOTEBY J.Longino, NOTEDATE 29-Apr-94: A canopy tree had been dropping large green fruits for two or more months. The tree had buttresses. The fruit looked like a giant avocado, thin green skin, a layer of orange, mealy pulp, in which was embedded a dense mass of fibers extending from a large pit. The pit had two halves, like two cotyledons; often a separate shoot and root grew from each half. The seedlings were replete with nectaries and very attractive to ants. The shoots had very large deciduous stipules which became smaller and smaller on older leaves. The younger stipules had a pair of white food bodies of some kind. The new leaves had conspicuous paired nectaries at the junction of leaf blade and petiole. These nectaries became less conspicuous on older leaves. Leaves had a row of glandular dots just in from the leaf margin, reminiscent of Marcgravia leaves. These dots were much less obvious on leaves of the mature tree. [possibly Licania, Chrysobalanaceae] A circle roughly 15m in diameter below the parent tree contained many germinating seeds, most of the shoots occupied by ants. The shoots were most attractive just before the first leaves expanded. Many of the shoots had suffered herbivore damage, but I saw no herbivores in action. I went to all the shoots I could find and collected roughly five specimens of the occupying ant. Larger ants, Ectatomma, Camponotus, Pachycondyla, and Pseudomyrmex usually had only 1 or 2 ants per shoot, and only one was collected. I saw almost no overlap. Even Pseudomyrmex seemed to be on shoots with no other ants. One shoot had 5 Pseudomyrmex individuals, as if they were congregating there. species approx. number of shoots ------- ------------------------ Ectatomma gibbum 1 Camponotus 9 1 C. 6 1 Pachycondyla unidentata 1 P. constricta 1 Pseudomyrmex boopis 5 Solenopsis A 6 Pheidole C 1 Paratrechina 1 1 Azteca C 1 Crematogaster limata-a 1 C. brasiliensis 5 C. limata-b 11 (may be some Crematogaster confusion; alcoholic specimens will have to be examined to be sure). 1w to LACM.",
