Galleries of carton construction covered the Erythrina, running out on many of the branches, to the very tips of living stems. The galleries ran to the base of the tree and on underground. Aggregations of workers occurred in pits or pockets in the trunk, often appearing as broad areas of carton where several galleries converged. These pockets were always dark and wet, and full of tiny white, fast arthropods [collembola]. The ants were in the galleries right down to ground level and below. When disturbed, workers raise their gaster and exude a large white droplet from the tip; the droplet smells strongly of acrid \"Crematogaster\" smell like Jamaican brevispinosa group colonies. Scale insects are tended both on the surface of the tree (under galleries) and in hollow living stems. The outer scales are white with white threads. The interior scales are large pink scales. I dissected several branches. It appears to me that the ants gain entrance through previously damaged spots, and then enlarge the chamber, working down into the pith. There were many dead areas (mini-knots) where the stem had been damaged (by stem borers?) and then resprouted from the base and continued on (figure in notes).",
