"dwc:fieldNotes": "NOTEBY J. Longino, NOTEDATE 6-Aug-05: 0630hrs, powerline behind station, Neivamyrmex; two Dorymyrmex nests, about 1m apart; each a small tumulus; each filled with Neivamyrmex workers, some workers clustered on surface of nest, mandibles open and directed upward in defensive posture, others entering and leaving nest. File of workers moving between the two nests. Workers were leaving the nest entrance with soil particles, depositing them on the tumulus, and reentering nest. Thus they were doing nest excavation, like they were inhabiting the nests. On the ground outside of one of the nests, about 3cm from entrance, was a dense cylinder of dead Dorymyrmex workers, tightly packed together, about 1cm long, 5mm diameter, with cluster of Neivamyrmex workers around it. My guess is that this was a plug of workers defending the nest entrance until overwhelmed and pulled out of nest entrance. There was a hovering phorid adult, attacking individual Neivamyrmex workers, with workers responding vigorously to the attacks. I did not capture the phorid. [I went back the next morning. The two Dorymyrmex nests that had been occupied were inactive. Other nests in the area were active.]",
