"dwc:occurrenceRemarks": "Flower diameter 40-54 mm, length 45-55 mm, stigma lobe number 2-4, stigma lobe color yellow with orange highlights, outer perianth color yellow with reddish midstripe, wide and narrow, inner perianth color yellow, blooms approximately 3:00 pm. Stem color brown on older portion and green with reddish-brown or green on new portion, spine color gray, one spine cluster collected, 1-2 spines per areole only on old stem segment, stem segments snake around and set roots on long stems. Fruit collected, persimmon color, fleshy, diameter 10-15 mm, length 30-80 mm, these may be aborted fruit, fruit are tasty. Flowers, spines and fruit collected by Ward.",

"description": "The Arizona State University Vascular Plant Herbarium (ASU) is among the most important in the greater Sonoran Desert region with over 315,000 specimens. We are particularly proud of our holdings of Cactaceae which include over 1,100 chromosome counts.\r\nAn herbarium is a collection of pressed, dried, and archived plants that are systematically arranged - each specimen a physical record of a plant growing at a particular place and at a particular time. Like most herbaria, we seek to document the geographical and ecological distribution of the regional flora, facilitate research, support teaching, and promote conservation.
