"dwc:fieldNotes": "NOTEBY J. Longino, NOTEDATE 23-Apr-98: Pseudomyrmex kuenckeli observation. A Ficus in the lab clearing, just behind the ALAS lab, was being used by researchers to practice tree-climbing with ropes. They commented that there were Pseudomyrmex in the tree. One of the researchers was stung on the finger, and it swelled considerably. I climbed the tree this morining, and found a populous P. kuenckeli colony in the upper parts of the tree. Workers were abundant and concentrated around 2cm dia. dead branches scattered over the larger inner branches of the crown. Workers were going in and out of the dead branches, and began streaming down the tree trunk from the bases of those dead branches. They were not rapid or extremely aggressive. They moved in a somewhat jerky fashion, moving ahead, stopping, moving ahead, stopping. I crushed one worker, and others did not seem to respond to it. I broke one short dead branch, and workers came out and stung my fingers. Workers seemed to be constantly stopping and grooming, rubbing tibiae together, and rubbing tibiae over the sides of the gaster. My impression from what I could see was that the colony was concentrated in the inner crown, not in the branch tips. I saw no excavated or occupied branch tips, although I did not go to the upper crown to check. The way workers poured from the bases of the dead branches suggested that cavities may have extended into the large live branches of the inner crown. I climbed the tree at night. The kuenckeli were all inside one of the nests I observed earlier (a low one near the climbing rope). I did not see a single worker out on the tree. I tapped the nest, and a few workers emerged and ran back and forth on the stick. Soon they went back inside. During the day, Paraponera were also foraging on the tree. At night, the surface of the tree was very busy with Camponotus atriceps, Azteca, Tapinoma, the common arboreal Wasmannia, Solenopsis picea, and Xenomyrmex. See JTL3872-s for ants from this tree.",
