Trunk densely covered with epiphytes. Branches with moss layer. I cut a major branch. Herbivory level high. Leaf fauna abundant: many Tingidae, spiders, lepidoptera larvae, walking sticks. Azteca xanthochroa occupied branch; response very weak. [figure of branch in field notes] The main leafy branch contained an active xanthochroa colony with one physogastric queen (#2517). Abundant carton in internodes. Distal chambers with large larvae, pupae; brood progressively smaller proximally until queen chamber. Below queen chamber, return to large brood. Proximal to this, internodes narrowed, closed entirely. A second arm of the branch (Y-shaped branch) narrow, dead wood in parts, end barely alive, no leaves. Terminal internodes with 3-4 chambers with 2-3 live xanthochroa queens each, some with tiny workers (#2518-s). One internode with lone alfari-group queen (#2518-s). All proximal internodes with dead queens, signs of colonization attempts. Older, proximal portions of branch also with dead queen remains in sealed chambers. No sign of prior sucessful colonies with workers. Tree has direct overhead sun, but is level to slightly sunken with respect to surrounding canopy. Tree circ. 68.5cm above prop roots. Fauna on leaf includes: 2 walking stick nymphs, fulgoroid nymph, many Tingidae, adults and nymphs, a large green chrysomelid, 1 Camponotus worker, 4 spiders (all different), 1 Miridae adult, which ran quickly and looked like an ant worker [check relationship of this mirid to mirids found with Liometopum], 1 minute elaterid, 1 curculionid, 1 Tapinoma worker, 1 dermestid-like fuzzy larva, 3 lepidopteran larvae. Photos of larvae. [further description of fauna in field notes, specimens in #2516-s). Dissection of main leafy branch: [see field notes for description of stem and internode structure] contained scattered mealy bugs. About 10 were found to be mummies covering pupae. About 3 naked pupae were also found atached to internode walls. [by 26 May, two adult parasitic wasps had emerged from mummified mealybugs. These put in collection #2517. Encyrtidae] An adult phorid was found running amongst worker ants lower in the branch (in #2517). It appears that an entire xanthochroa colony was in the terminal 1-1.5m of this branch. there were no alates. There were no large muellerian body caches that I observed. Elsewhere in the branch were mainly failed attempts to colonize. One internode contained loose thoraxes of >24 xanthochroa queens.",
