"dwc:occurrenceRemarks": "Originally collected by Dave Silverman (#36), June 1989, [on an open sandy, south-facing slope, south of the highway, looking down the Virgin River. This Opuntia erinacea var. utahensis-woodburyi-pinkavae form was fairly consistent as I recall in this area and I had seen it inside the park also. The area is he generally red sandstones and open sagebrush areas with loose sand, my collection site was heavily cattle-grazed. Most of these cactus were in partially disturbed areas, often adjacent to the roadside. #36 was collected on a red sandy soils on a S-facing slope near the highway among sagebrush. My clones (all from one collection) have been prone to cristate flowers on a regular basis, making this a distincly beautiful cactus in flower; attached are photos from my garden.] n=33 during meiosis of microgametogenisis (10 May1996) from individual transplanted to Chino Valley, Arizona; fruits pressed and photographed from same individual, 1 August 2004. "description": "The Arizona State University Vascular Plant Herbarium (ASU) is among the most important in the greater Sonoran Desert region with over 315,000 specimens. We are particularly proud of our holdings of Cactaceae which include over 1,100 chromosome counts.\r\nAn herbarium is a collection of pressed, dried, and archived plants that are systematically arranged - each specimen a physical record of a plant growing at a particular place and at a particular time. Like most herbaria, we seek to document the geographical and ecological distribution of the regional flora, facilitate research, support teaching, and promote conservation.
