"dwc:locationRemarks": "Correct coordinates to 36.54779, -117.48816 and elevation to 6850 ft (datum WGS84; GPS Garmin map 60CSx). McQuesten (23 June 1917, p. 12) wrote \"later took a trip to Reynold's Cabin...spent night at cabin;: Dixon from (23 June 1917, p. 744) wrote \"in the afternoon we took traps and went on to Jackass Spring and then to the sage brush mesa about 3 miles N.E. of the Springs\" and (24 June 1917, p. 745) \"I went over to the cow cabin this evening to stay all night...the cabin is situated in a draw filled with willows, wild rose, and sagebrush. The rocky granite boulder strewn hills are covered with an excellent growth of pinyon.\" Finally, Grinnell (30 Sept 1917, p. 1539) wrote \"have made camp in the 'draw' near the cabin owned by Silas Reynolds and used as headquarters for the cowmen thru the winter...this is near the head of Cottonwood and Marble canyons which go down to Death Valley but drains to the north into Saline Valley.\" Grinnell (p. 1545-1546) subsequently wrote “It is quite likely we have underestimated the altitude of our base camp here. It is probably nearer 6500 or 6700 than 6200. But the small scale of the topographic map precludes locating it definitely. Also, the particular draw we are in may debouch into the head of Cottonwood Canyon to the east rather than into “Willow Creek” and Saline Valley as the map would seem to indicate.” Reynold's Cabin, now Hunter Cabin, is adjacent to Hunter Spring; clearly McQuesten, Dixon, and Grinnell worked the area immediately adjacent to the cabin and spring. Trapping was done at spots around the spring, including both \"Teanoma Hill\" to the south and another granite boulder outcrop upslope to the north [e.g., Dixon photo, MVZ:Img:2556] as well as along the 'draw' they mention. The GPS coordinates taken by JL Patton on 11 October 2016 at the cabin had a precision of 13 feet; a locality error of 250 m would cover the area they trapped. (Reviewed by Jim Patton 8 Sep 2017)",

"description": "The MVZ bird collection is one of the largest in the United States. It houses over 185,000 catalogued specimens, including 174 holotype and 2 syntypes. The majority of specimens are study skins, but the collection also contains over 21,000 skeletal specimens and 3,200 fluid-preserved specimens. Other types of preparations include flat specimens (wings, skins) and body skins with skeletons (\"schmoos\"). Tissues, anatomical parts (e.g., syrinx, stomach contents), and parasites are routinely preserved with specimens. Many specimens also are associated with cataloged audio recordings.",
