I changed the methods as follows: Taking sample: In a straight line (transect), walk five paces, take one hopper full (subjectively taking whatever litter looks good) (a hopper full is between one half and three quarters full, usually). Repeat until 10 hoppers have been sifted. Orientation of sampling transect: always 123 degrees from GIS pole. For the repeat samples around GIS 1800/900, continually move south (213 degrees), five to 10 paces each time, go east (123 degrees) until the juncture of swamp and slope is reached, then do transect up the slope, continuing at 123 degrees. Length of time in hanging sacks: 3 days. Today's samples: 2000/900 sample taken at about 1000hrs; 1800/900 sample taken at 1200hrs. The day was sunny with no rain. The litter was uniformly moist. The samples were hung by 1400hrs. Each sample filled about 2.5 hanging sacks. [samples taken off 5 Jul, 1400-1600hrs] See field notes for map summarizing 1800/900 samples to date.. NOTEBY J.
