When the first stones were lifted, there were large numbers of workers, forming almost a solid sheet, but no brood. When I lifted the large central stone, a massive number of workers formed a solid boiling mass. They were very aggressive, swarming up my hands and biting. The air was filled with a sudden strong acrid cloud of formic acid that made it difficult to breath near the rock. In one portion of the area beneath the rock there were scattered packets of eggs that workers were quickly carrying down tunnels into the ground. This species must overwinter with large numbers of workers (or pupae), yielding a large worker force early in the year. The presence of eggs but no larger brood, and the complete absence of brood in other nests of this species, suggests brood production delayed until later in the summer, or brood sequestered underground, even though workers amass under stones.",
