Old label in the jar with this single specimen reads: \"Noturus marginatus B49-31 Catawba\". There are currently no other known records in the North Carolina portion of the New River but they are known from downstream in the system in Virginia (eg. Jenkins & Burkhead, 1994). Other species cataloged with this field number are typical of the New River but were found separately.",
