The Norton-Brown Herbarium (MARY) at the University of Maryland is home to a natural history collection that includes ~93,000 specimens of flowering plants, cone-bearing plants, algae, mosses, liverworts, lichens, and fungi. Established in 1901, the Norton-Brown Herbarium holds a large number of specimens from Maryland, as well as a significant number of specimens from the Mid-Atlantic and the western U.S. The collections housed here were instrumental in developing the Woody Plants of Maryland (Brown & Brown 1972) and Herbaceous Plants of Maryland (Brown & Brown 1984) - Maryland's most recent flora and manual of vascular plants.
