Founded in 1908, the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Herbarium (NCU) is a world-wide collection of vascular plants, bryophytes, fossils (esp. Devonian), algae (esp. red marine temperate), fungi (esp. collections of Wm. C. Coker & N. Couch), and lichens. The lichen collection is world-wide with a focus on the Southeastern United States. NCU has many lichen specimens collected by Gary B. Perlmutter, Eimy Rivas Plata, Alexander Evans, William W. Calkins, Paul O. Schallert, Jason Hollinger, Francis Harper, Fred W. Gray, and William C.
